Do real estate appraisers have any type of national accreditation or training? ?

I need to hire a real estate appraiser in Indiana and Florida. Two questions:
1.Do real estate appraisers have any type of national accreditation or training?
2.Do they need a license? If so how can you verify they are legit?
Thanks

I’m not sure if it is national. They are definitely licensed by the state at least in CA
There is much training and accrediting.
check out the department of real estate website and they should refer you to the correct place
Good Luck!

Licensing for real estate appraisers is mandated at the national level and implemented at the state level. All states have a regulatory board. Florida’s board is here: http://www.myflorida.com/dbpr/re/freab.html
Indiana’s is here: http://www.in.gov/pla/appraiser.htm
Your first question is more difficult to answer. There is no national accreditation of appraisers, per se. Some appraisers seek out and earn designations from various national appraiser organizations such as The Appraisal Institute or the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers.
Following the Savings and Loan debacle, the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery, and Enforcement Act of 1989 (FIRREA) saw increasing federal involvement in the training requirements for appraisers. Those requirements were substantially boosted again at the beginning of 2008. For the most part, appraisers already licensed were grandfathered.
